Industry Statistics
• One in seven jobs in Oklahoma is directly or indirectly supported by the oil and natural gas industry.
• Oklahoma ranks third in the nation in natural gas production.
• Oklahoma ranks fifth in the nation in crude oil production.
• In 2007, Oklahoma's oil and natural gas producers paid nearly $1 billion in gross production taxes. Those funds are spent by the state on education, roads, bridges, wildlife conservation and other state programs.
• Oklahoma has more than 120,000 active oil and natural gas wells, producing more than 61 million barrels of oil the United States would otherwise have to import each year.
• Eight percent of America's natural gas liquid reserves are located in Oklahoma.
• More than a dozen of the 100 largest natural gas fields in America are located in Oklahoma. These massive collections of natural gas reserves have yet to be extracted or produced.
• Oklahoma has five petroleum refineries with a combined capacity of more than 500,000 barrels per day -- That's roughly
3 percent of the total U.S. capacity.
• The oil and natural gas producers and royalty owners who support the
OERB have voluntarily contributed more than
$58 million to restore more than 10,000
abandoned well sites across Oklahoma.
• Through the OERB, Oklahoma's oil and natural gas industry has contributed $1.75 million toward weatherizing homes for low-income Oklahoma families, saving them up to 30 percent on their utility bills.
• Approximately three-fifths of Oklahoma households use natural gas as their primary energy source for home heating.
• Oklahoma's oil and natural gas producers have given more than $1 million in OERB Petroleum Scholarships, supporting hundreds of Oklahoma college students majoring in petroleum-related fields.
